What is the difference between a coach and a therapist?

Great question! 

  • Coaching is more about moving forward and achieving specific personal or professional goals.

  • Therapy is often about healing and addressing mental health or emotional issues, often by exploring the past.

Not so fast! Coaching means a lot of things to a lot of people but the gold standard in coaching accreditation is the International Coaching Federation. Many coaches are not credentialed and you'll immediately see why. ICF-credentialed coaches help their clients see new possibilities, explore things from a different perspective and set goals to unlock even more success than they could have ever dreamed of. Plus, a bonus of having a coach as a guide (instead of a mentor or consultant) is that there is hard data around the lasting impact of "client as driver"--people are most motivated and engaged when they feel a sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in their actions and decisions, not when someone else tells them what they should do.
